One of the amazing things about our Rockciffe aerodrome is that it offers so much of interest to the aviation enthusiast.  We must have one of the most beautiful practice areas in the country.   We have the museum for inspiration.  We have such a wide variety of fields to fly to: grass in Embrun, another ex-military strip in Carp, a regional airport like Gatineau and a full blown international airport in Ottawa - all minutes away.

Then the group was dropped in the middle of nowhere and left to survive the night with the resources available. On 26th August 2005, an evening when the world's thoughts were on the England juggernaut hitting Australia at Trent Bridge (inspired by A Flintoff's stupendous century and 85 imaginative runs from Geraint Jones, England came from 229 for four overnight to 477, their highest Ashes total in Nottingham for 67 years), The Gentlemen met The Players for a needle match at the Rockcliffe Flying Club.

As usual on these occasions, the final score does not tell the whole story. The passion and the agony are not reflected but, for the record, the Gentlemen, batting first and led by W Young achieved 26 all out and J Duclos's Players responded with 27 for 5, A Hobbs and A Shamaie carrying their bats at the end of play.

First Solo After 16 Hours

I had my intro flight in October 2003, this was my first time ever in a plane.

The only other time I have ever been flying was a helicopter ride when I was 12 or 13 at the country fair where I grew up, well if you count jumping motorcycles 30 feet in the air then maybe more, but I don't think that counts. Anyway after my intro flight I was hooked. I signed up for the next ground school class and started flight training with James Feagan in November 2003. The winter was long and cold and there were times that I didn't fly for weeks due to weather, but made it to spring.

Search and Rescue Hope

A Cessna 182 departed Timmins with the pilot and two passengers on board, destined for Montreal - Dorval (CYUL), with a planned fuel stop at North Bay (CYYB). The pilot notified FSS that due to weather they would continue to Pembroke (CYTA) for fuel. The flight departed Pembroke 12:15Z planning VFR OT at 8000 to CYUL. At 12:42Z the pilot contacted FSS for a weather update, indicating that he was descending due to deteriorating weather ahead. This was the last contact with the aircraft.

The purpose of the trip was to transport a 10 year old boy to Montreal for specialized treatment relating to Diabetes, his father was accompanying him.

This is day 3 of the search. The primary area, CSAD 1, has been covered at a high level, we are proceeding to a lower level detailed search of the area. Resources today include 9 search aircraft, 1 communications aircraft and 3 ground vehicles.

Dunking Training in Ottawa

On Saturday, I completed a 6 hour dunking course, a course designed for pilots who fly over water.

We had three hours of theory on Thursday evening starting with about 12 of us sitting at desks in the Rockcliffe groundschool room looking attentive. We each had a pile of equipment on the desk in front of us, including a lifejacket in a bag as it would be on a trans-Atlantic flight. The instructor asked how many of us had ever put on a life jacket. The answer was that, while most of us had life jackets in our aircraft, none of us had ever put one on. Or even taken one out of the bag.

Flying for me was one of those things you don't bother because you know you'll never do it. Who never thought about buying a Ferrari, going on a date with a famous person or made plans on how to spend the lottery millions? That’s what flying an aeroplane was for me.

Believe it or not, there is actually someone out there crazy enough to let me fly their airplane ALL BY MYSELF!

I started my lessons in June at Rocliffe Flying Club which operates out of a small un-controlled airport in Ottawa, Canada. The circuit there is pretty tight due to noise abatement issues so the less planes in the air the better.

30th April 2003 – I got up very early this morning, I don’t know why, I just felt it wasn’t going to be an ordinary day. I had a booking at 0930 with James Feagan, my instructor at Rockcliffe Flying Club and I wanted to check the weather to see what the trend was. I logged on to the NAV Canada web site and went through my morning ritual of checking the met. Surface Analysis to get the big picture, Graphical Area Forecast for the regional information and then the METAR / TAF for CYOW and CYND. Things looked good. An area of high pressure was settled over the Ottawa Valley, there was no ceiling, visibility was 15SM and winds were north-easterly and light. My hopes began to rise. I had about twenty five hours of dual instruction under my belt at this point and had managed to get the PSTAR and Radio exams out of the way a couple of days beforehand. James had signed me off on all of the pre-solo requisites and I had been issued with my official Student’s Pilot Permit. Technically, I was ready to go solo but I still needed plenty of work on my cross wind skills and James was patiently schooling me before letting me loose. It looked like a perfect day out there so I was hoping that I could perform well enough to go it alone, but I really didn’t have any idea if today would be the day or not.
