An Instrument rating allows a private or commercial pilot license holder to fly into Instrument Meteorological conditions, ie cloud and visibility less than VFR. Instrument rating is required for a commercial pilot to be PIC of a commercial flight carrying passengers at night. Instrument rating includes VFR OTT rating.

Requirements

An Instrument Rating is issued for aircraft in one of the following groups:

  • Group 1 - Multi-engine
  • Group 2 - Multi-engine Center line thrust
  • Group 3 - Single Engine
  • Group 4 - Helicopter

The Rockcliffe Flying Club can conduct Group 1 and Group 3 instrument training

Before commencing flight training for the Instrument Rating, an applicant must hold a Private or Commercial Pilot License

Prior to application for the rating, an applicant shall:

  • have 50 hours cross-country pilot-in-command time;
  • have completed a minimum of 40 hours training, of which 20 hours can be completed in an approved Flight Training Device. Rockcliffe's full motion Redbird FMX is Transport Canada approved for both single and multi-engine instrument training;
